Markets · WEEKLY MARKET BRIEF · SEPTEMBER 8, 2026
The week ahead: inflation takes center stage.
September 7–11, 2026: a shortened trading week, an ECB decision, Oracle and Adobe earnings, and the inflation reports ahead of the next Fed meeting.
The first full market week of September has only four U.S. trading sessions, but a crowded agenda. Wall Street returns from Labor Day with two inflation releases ahead, a European Central Bank decision on Thursday, and a set of company reports led by Oracle and Adobe. The question is how the new information changes expectations for profits and interest rates.
Week of September 7–11, 2026. Calendar checked September 8, 2026. All economic release times below are Eastern. This is a preview of scheduled events, not a report of results that have already happened.
Why this week matters
The U.S. stock market was closed Monday for Labor Day. The Federal Reserve’s next scheduled meeting is September 15–16, so this week’s inflation figures arrive shortly before that decision. The ECB’s monetary policy meeting concludes September 10. Neither central bank’s decision should be treated as known in advance.

What to watch in the inflation reports
Analysis: Compare both headline and core inflation with expectations available immediately before the release. Then look at the composition: a broad change in price pressure carries a different message from a move concentrated in a few categories. PPI adds a producer price perspective; it is not a direct substitute for CPI.
The market’s response is part of the story. Watch Treasury yields and whether equity gains or losses spread beyond a handful of large companies. A favorable headline followed by weakening prices would deserve investigation, rather than an automatic bullish interpretation.
The company reports in focus
GameStop, Tuesday: The company says complete second quarter results are expected September 8, following preliminary results. The useful comparison is with what has already been disclosed, not just with an older estimate. Company announcement ↗
Sunbelt Rentals, Wednesday: Its announced results call is September 9 at 8:30 a.m. ET, with the release to appear beforehand. That supersedes the Tuesday entry in the wider calendar below. Company announcement ↗
Oracle and Adobe, Thursday: Both are listed for after the close. Adobe has announced the date and a 5:00–6:00 p.m. ET call; Oracle’s date is supported by the weekly calendar, but the reporting time was not independently verified from a company announcement in this review. Analysis: For the software reports, the research questions are demand, recurring revenue, margins, cash generation and the cost of pursuing growth. A reported earnings beat alone does not settle whether the shares offer value. Guidance and the price paid for that outlook matter too.

A trader’s lens
Analysis: For a position held over several months, ask whether this week changes the underlying thesis. Has the business outlook improved? Does the valuation leave room for disappointment? Is the market beginning to recognize the improvement? The strongest follow up research will connect these questions to observable evidence, including what would invalidate the idea.
That is the purpose of this weekly diary: identify the events, establish what is confirmed, and return to the evidence once the results arrive.
